How The Humane Society Of The United States.
Contrary to what many people might be thinking, the Humane Society of the United States does not only keep animals for people to come and adopt. While the part of the HSUS’s work is to support the local animal shelters, the work it does encompasses more than that. To bring out the complex work the organization carries out using simple words, the organization’s motto is ‘Celebrating Animals, Confronting Cruelty’.
Thousnds of species exist today in the world today. The HSUS work is to protect, save, and rescue these animals. HSUS does not only work in the U.S but has extended globally with some of its missions being to rescue sea animals. The animals rescued by the organization have been involved in racing, rodeos, Zoos, circuses, hunting, fashion, aquariums and research. The list is however long.
Another major work f the HSUS is to work with the pet owners at home and also providing support to various local animal shelters through the utilization of the various animal professionals which it has. HSUS has been a leading organization in lobbying for laws related to animals both locally and internally. These laws are meant to curb animal cruelty. Animals are also victims when a disaster such as when the Tsunami hit the South East Asia in 2004. In order to rescue animals in disaster cases, the HSUS is always prepared with a team that can travel to the affected areas whether locally or internationally. HSU also has a program of educating backyard owners of how to coexist with backyard animals such as the squirrels, mice, and raccoons.
The history of animal welfare organizations has a long history and started way before HSUS was founded. The first organization to be founded was the society for the prevention of cruelty of animals and was founded in 1886. It was the first organization of its kind in the U.S. There are however many other organizations that came up. In a delegates meeting held by the various animal rights organizations in 1887, there was an agreement that all the organizations should be collapsed to for the American Humane Association. In 1954 however, there was rift between members and some of those split formed what is now known as HSUS.
The main goal of the HSUS was to ensure that all types of animal cruelty are eliminated in the whole world. The first legislation which it pushed was the removal of the law that required shelters to turn over animals to be used in research work. The organization has led to passing of many laws that protect animals. The laws range from those protecting endangered species to those that make it illegal to mistreat research animals inhumanly.
